History of the League

It’s been thrills, chills and a whole lot of fun and excitement watching thousands of boys and girls compete as players over the past 41 years.

Agincourt Canadians has been an important part of Scarborough since 1967, emerging from the Agincourt Lions Hockey League and starting off with twelve house league teams in three divisions with three competitive teams. Original games were played in Agincourt, hence our name.

Over the years, our presidents-Ted Ritchie, Bill Russell, Jim Norwood, Blaine Morlock and Ross Cockburn along with thousands of community-minded volunteers have given this league their time to administrate, co-ordinate, coach, manage, referee, and time-keep.

The League has been and is sponsored by local businesses helping to promote a strong house league with teams represented in every division, on each select team and in the SHA.

Parents have been our greatest supporters, cheering on their children’s teams and participating in fund-raising draws, barbecues, bowling nights, car washes and skate-a-thons.

Eight “A” level teams participate in the Scarborough Hockey Association yearly and over the years have competed and won their share of Scarborough, Toronto and Ontario championships.

The Agincourt Canadians has been in its present location, Don Montgomery Arena, since 1975, running house league programs with as many as 1250 players yearly, in the 1980’s, on Saturdays on both rinks,  using as many as five other rinks for practices. Now, over 500 players each year continue the tradition. Nine Select teams from the house league represent us in tournaments across Scarborough and Toronto.

The Valentine Select Tournament has been an ongoing part of “Canadians “ hockey for the past 30 years. Once a two weekend tournament, it now provides competition for over sixty teams on one hundred hours of ice over one five day weekend. Dave Mulholland, John Hoddinott, Frank Mitchell, Gord Rolfe, and Bruce Hamilton have helped to make this event a continued success over the years.

Agincourt Canadians Hockey is community hockey. Something we do together to enrich our children’s lives, to teach team work and fair play, to network and to develop long-lasting friendships and memories. Proud of those who have gone on to successful careers, we are glad to see them return to share their experiences and talents with our present group of eager players.
